Taking away the pain for family doctors
DATE: 2024 | LOCATION: NORTH EAST | PROJECT AREA: INVESTMENT & PROJECT DELIVERY | PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETE
A North East medical practice had been operating out of a temporary modular building for a number of years. We worked with them to clarify what they wanted from a new practice building, and supported them through the whole process to design and construct the bespoke building they deserved.
The solution
For seven years, the Middleton and Dinsdale Medical Practice team had been operating out of a temporary modular building – far longer than they had expected to be. This wasn’t ideal for patients or staff, with limited space to meet increased patient demand, and temperatures too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
They desperately needed new facilities, but without capital funding, resources or in-house expertise, they needed support to make their dream of a new practice building become a reality.

The challenges
Our team has been supporting GP practices to deliver the best facilities for patients and staff since 2004, helping find innovative solutions to construct and extend primary care facilities. We worked with the practice staff to clarify what they wanted from their new practice, and then delivered the new practice from inception to completion, including providing funding for the scheme.
We supported the GP practice staff throughout the whole process, purchasing the site, managing the design and construction of the scheme and ensuring it complied with all technical requirements of health buildings.
The practice staff were involved throughout the whole design and delivery process, ensuring the building works well for both staff and patients, and giving the building an identity of its own.

The result
The Middleton and Dinsdale team are now happily delivering services from their purpose-built practice building. They’ll lease the building for 25 years, removing the need for capital investment to bring their plans to fruition. The end result is a bespoke building suited to their way of working, and tailored to the practice’s individual needs.
The scheme is a testament to close partnership working, not only with the practice, but also with the ICB and NHS Property Services, who have been extremely supportive throughout and have been instrumental in delivering this amazing facility which will transform the day-to-day experience of both patients and staff.

transforming patient care
Practice Manager Liz Stewart said: “This new practice will transform the way we can provide patient care, giving us a facility purpose-built for medical care that we and the community can be proud of.
“Your team has supported us throughout the entire process, ensuring our new building is exactly what we wanted it to be. It’s designed to allow us to deliver a wider range of services to patients, but adaptable enough to be able to flex and change in line with changing patient requirements over the coming years.”

“Without private investment, we would still have been trapped in an old temporary building, yet now we’re delivering our services from a bespoke, new-build centre which has been designed around the way we work. Staff and patients at the practice can see a tangible difference every day, and we’re now able to take on new patients and offer more services.”
