Boosting clinical capacity in primary care
LOCATION: HULL | PROJECT AREA: PROJECT DELIVERY | PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED
Sewell Advisory’s project delivery team managed a £480,000 reconfiguration project to expand clinical capacity at Hull’s Newington Health Centre.
The challenge
The NHS is committed to maximising utilisation of the primary and community healthcare estate, along with improving access to care, in order to provide increased capacity for GP and community appointments.
Newington Health Centre is a modern, two-storey building constructed in 2006 under the Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) programme, offering a range of healthcare services to residents of West Hull.
The Haxby Group GP practice had recently moved into the health centre, but the space they had available was inadequate as the patient population the practice serves is increasing rapidly.
The departure of another healthcare provider who had previously been based in the health centre gave an opportunity to repurpose existing space.
This project was a collaboration between LIFT company and health centre owner Citycare, head tenant CHP, building users Haxby Group GP, Humber and North Yorkshire ICS and contractors Sewell Construction.
The Solution
Sewell Advisory project managed the conversion of existing underutilised non-clinical reception and back office space into new clinical space for Haxby Group.
Sewell Advisory, working on behalf of Citycare, took the project from initial commission and feasibility study through to the development phase, which involved design, cost and programme development, as well as managing the legal process and contract development. We also project managed the delivery of the scheme, and were appointed as Employer’s Agent to deliver the contract management and administration.
The result
The remodelling project has provided an extra three clinical rooms for Haxby Group, plus an extra storage room. The project has also helped improve the overall patient experience by streamlining reception services.
This will increase productivity in the health centre, helping patients access more appointments with GPs and other healthcare professionals and giving staff better facilities to work from.
We’re now working to project manage a scheme to improve the health centre’s sustainability, adding photovoltaic panels to the roof to reduce both the carbon footprint and the energy costs of the building.
This expansion at Newington Health Care Centre is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through effective partnership working for easier access to appointments, a better patient experience, and ultimately, improved health outcomes for the people of Hull. We’ve been able to maximise the use of existing space and create additional clinical capacity. This means improved access to vital primary care services for the local community, in modern, core, accessible healthcare buildings
