CREATING A SCHOOL FIT FOR THE FUTURE

DATE: 2019 – 2023   |   LOCATION: HULL  |   PROJECT AREA: PROJECT DELIVERY   |   PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED

Hull was experiencing increased demand and insufficient capacity within the city’s secondary school system, meaning more places were needed to fulfil demand.

Our team developed and project managed the scheme from the feasibility study right through on-site delivery and hand-over.

The challenge

Hull Esteem, who deliver infrastructure projects for the city on behalf of Hull City Council, have an ongoing role in supporting the Council to meet their sufficiency needs, and asked us to project manage the £15m Endeavour School project. This was an ambitious scheme to remodel a former school building back into a modern, 1200-place secondary school for Hull’s prestigious Trinity Academy to move into.

The solution

During the 24 month development and delivery phase, we worked as an embedded part of the Esteem team to keep the project stayed on track and any issues were quickly resolved. Our work included:

– Feasibility study to find out whether the project was realistic and could be achieved
– Weekly project team meetings and site inspections with monthly contractor progress meetings
– Regular engagement meetings with end users to seek input and feedback
– Processing compensation event works
– Using Sypro Contract Manager to streamline the contract management process
– Coordinating community-focused activities

The result

Our structured approach to addressing challenges ensured that the new Hull Trinity House School was delivered on time ready for the new school year, and within the agreed budget.

Although there were a number of personnel changes in the contractor and client teams, our people proved a consistent presence throughout the lifecycle of the project, which was instrumental to providing continuity and insight throughout the entire scheme – ensuring the original objectives and vision were delivered.

A school that's fit for purrpose

The school now have a modern, fit-for-purpose educational facility to provide the best learning environment for their students. They’ve also been able to accept girls into the previously all-boys school, doubling their intake of pupils and providing 600 additional school places for the local authority.

“Consultants from the team have been embedded into Esteem throughout, providing welcome continuity during this complex project, and ensuring the school was successfully completed on time, with all stakeholder needs met, or even exceded."

Gavin Barley, General Manager, Hull Esteem
