HELPING IN-PATIENT MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS GET BETTER QUICKER
DATE: 2023/2024 | LOCATION: EAST YORKSHIRE | PROJECT AREA: PROJECT DELIVERY | PROJECT STATUS: ONGOING
Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, primary care and community-based healthcare in across Hull, the East Riding and North Yorkshire Their annual capital programme seeks to improve patient care by upgrading the facilities and accommodation at several of their mental health in-patient centres.
The challenge
The secure nature of the sites – which house vulnerable people – and the fact that the centres needed to remain operational at all times, means that the work is complex, and needs a great deal of planning and preparation to ensure everyone remains safe at all times, and that there’s minimal disruption to staff and service users.
Acting for Citycare, we delivered several complex projects for the Trust and they chose us to work as their strategic estates partner as they recognise that as well as delivering projects on time and within budget, we also understand the unique challenges presented by work in secure mental health units.
The solution
Working in partnership with the Trust, we acted as the client-side project manager, identifying and prioritising which refurbishment and remodelling projects could be delivered through the annual capital programme. All NHS trusts face competing demands on resources, and an external, objective appraisal of the benefits and cost-effectiveness of each scheme allows the projects that will have the biggest impact on patient wellbeing to be prioritised.
As well as establishing the programme of works, the team also performed technical appraisals to determine the scope of each project, procured professional advisors and contractors, managed the tender process and recommended who the Trust should procure.
The result
The scheme has delivered a programme of works that create a better environment for patients and staff. The below are in progress or completed:
– Refurbishment of wards and communal areas
– Refurbishment of Pine View Ward
– Ensuite accommodation for seclusion facilities
– Installation of Covid recovery ventilation facilities at New Bridges and Westlands
– Secure bedroom door replacements at Avondale mental health assessment centre
– Creation of a psychiatric intensive care unit extra care suite at Miranda House
“Citycare have worked with us every step of the way to help us deliver this project. Secure mental health units are probably one of the most challenging healthcare environments to work in, but Citycare have made sure every phase has been delivered on time, to an exceptional standard.”
